So athletes at a young age makes women live longer
Recent studies reveal that being an athlete at a young age can make a woman longevity. That's because they have a lower risk of premature death due to cancer or other chronic diseases.
These findings are based on a recent study conducted in China in women in their 40s. Researchers found that those who exercised about 80 minutes a week when adolescents have a 16 percent reduction in risk of cancer deaths and 15 percent reduction in risk of death from other diseases.
"Our findings support the importance of promoting regular exercise habits early in life to prevent an increased risk of death from cancer and other chronic diseases," said Sarah Nechuta, assistant professor of medicine at Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville.
For this study, researchers used data from nearly 75,000 women aged between 40 to 70 years. They all took part in the Shanghai Women's Health Study. The women enrolled in the program (1996-2000) were asked about their participation in sports between the ages of 13 to 19 years.
After follow-up, 13 years later, nearly 5,300 women found dead, including more than 2,300 women known to have cancer and 1,620 rest suffer from heart disease.
